FIANO AREA OF AVELLINO - LAPIO (AV)

In the "Adopt a vine" package -> Bottles of Fiano di Avellino DOCG

A short history

The Rocca del Principe Company is located in Lapio, a small town on the hills of green Irpinia, the municipality that is home to one of the largest crus in Campania and to which the Company has been dedicated for more than thirty years to Fiano di Avellino. From a climatic point of view, the territory is favored by the presence of the Picentini mountains: one of its peaks, Mount Tuoro (1400 mt.) is located a very short distance away and acts as a thermoregulator in modulating the heat and accentuating the temperature variations at night and in winter.

The winery was founded in 2004 (until that date, producers of grapes given to others) by the will of Ercole Zarrella, his wife Aurelia Fabrizio and his brother Antonio, driven by the common goal of producing exclusively typical wines: Fiano, Aglianico, Taurasi whose DOCG and DOC, unique in their territory, are best expressed in their various declinations. The Value and respect for their lands, inherited from their grandparents and parents, is also passed on to the three daughters of Ercole and Aurelia: Maria Rita Simona and Martina, all dedicated to a specific role in the company. From here, passion, tradition and great respect for the territory frame the bottles produced.

Our Vineyards

The company has about 10 hectares of land of which 6 hectares are cultivated with Fiano, and 1.5 with Aglianico. The Fiano vineyards are located on the slopes of the Arianiello hill, the highest part of the municipality of Lapio which certainly represents one of the areas most suited to the cultivation of Fiano . They were planted from 1990 to 2014, located on two opposite sides of the hill, the North side and the West side. The Aglianico vineyard was planted, not by chance, in the Campore district at 500 meters above sea level with a SOUTH/EAST exposure on soil consisting of clayey and calcareous marl, an area where Aglianico has always been cultivated with great results.

Vineyard cultivation and processing system :
– Training system: double espalier
– Guyot, (more recent systems single Guyot)
– Plant density: 3000 vines per hectare
All the operations that take place in the vineyard are aimed at obtaining low yields per hectare while respecting the environment: working between rows, exclusively mechanical weeding, organic fertilization in alternate years, integrated pest management for phytosanitary treatments, green pruning and thinning of the bunches in the most generous years.

Winemaking

FIANO winemaking technique : In the cellar, the healthiest winemaking techniques are used to preserve the quality of the grapes and to create wines intended for long aging. The harvest is carried out when the right technological ripeness is reached, paying close attention to preserving the acidity, which, depending on the climatic trend of the vintages, occurs between the end of September and the first half of October. The carefully selected grapes, harvested by hand and placed in small 20 kg crates, are immediately taken to the cellar, destemmed, placed in a membrane press and subjected to soft pressing. The free-run must obtained after static clarification is fermented in steel at a controlled temperature for 40 days, followed by periodic batonnage. The wine obtained is refined in steel on fine lees for 10 months and subsequently, in the bottle for at least 4/6 months. Marketing begins in the first months of the second year following the harvest
